Frequently asked questions

How do I work out the GST in a total?

Divide the GST-inclusive total by 11. A $110 total contains $10 GST β€” because the total is 110% of the base, the GST is 10/110 = 1/11 of it.

What is exempt from GST in Australia?

GST-free items include most basic food, many health and medical services, education courses and exports. Input-taxed items like residential rent and many financial services also carry no GST.

When must a business register for GST?

Once GST turnover reaches $75,000 ($150,000 for non-profits), or immediately for taxi/ride-share drivers. Registered businesses charge 10% and claim credits for GST paid on inputs via their BAS.
